Peels, stones and tools
Grill-top pizza ovens: what actually turns a grill into one
A bare stone on a grate cooks the base and leaves the top raw. These four put a roof over the pizza, and they publish enough about themselves to tell you which one fits what you own.

The short answer
On a normal gas grill, the BakerStone box — it is the only one here that publishes its baking chamber, 14.9 x 13.8 x 3 in, so you know a 12 in pizza fits. On charcoal or a pellet grill, the Cuisinart CPO-700, which is the only one specified for all three fuels. On a Blackstone griddle, a Stanbroil attachment, because Blackstone does not sell a pizza oven on Amazon at all. On a Large Big Green Egg, Big Green Egg's own wedge.
All four do the same thing: they put stone or steel above and beside the pizza so the top cooks at the same rate as the base. What separates them is what they fit and what they admit about themselves.
Why a roof is the whole point
A pizza needs the base and the top to finish together. In a pizza oven that happens because the roof is as hot as the floor and radiates down onto the toppings. On an open grill there is no roof — the lid is 200 F cooler than the fire and a long way from the pizza — so the base browns, the cheese does not, and the fix people reach for is more time, which burns the bottom.
Every product on this page is a way of building a roof. The three boxes do it with an enclosure that sits on the grates; the Big Green Egg wedge does it by turning a kamado's dome into a front-loading chamber. That is the same reasoning behind why one side of a pizza burns, applied to an appliance that was never meant to do this.
What Blackstone actually sells, and what it does not
This deserves stating plainly because it is one of the most searched things in the category. When we searched the Amazon catalog for "Blackstone pizza oven" during this build, the results contained no Blackstone-branded pizza oven. What came back was a Blackstone-branded cover for one, and a set of third-party attachments — mostly Stanbroil — that convert a Blackstone griddle.
So if you own a Blackstone griddle and you want pizza, the realistic path is a third-party hood sized to your griddle width. Stanbroil makes three: one for the 17 and 22 in griddles, one for the 22 and 28, and one for the 36. They are not interchangeable, and the one below is the middle size.
What these publish, and what they leave out
| Conversion | Fits | Published temperature | Chamber or stone | Bake time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BakerStone box | 3-burner+ gas, larger charcoal | 600 to 800 F | Chamber 14.9 x 13.8 x 3 in | 2 to 4 min |
| Cuisinart CPO-700 | Gas, charcoal, pellet | Up to 800 F | Box 16.3 x 14 x 4.75 in | 5 to 7 min |
| Stanbroil for Blackstone | Blackstone 22 and 28 in griddles | not published | Stone 17.3 x 11.8 in | not published |
| Big Green Egg wedge | Large Big Green Egg | 400 to 700 F | Pizzas up to 14 in | not published |
Published figures from each maker's own product page. Blank means the maker does not state it.
Two things fall out of that table. BakerStone is the only maker here that publishes an internal chamber rather than an outer box, which is the figure that actually tells you what fits. And the two that publish a bake time disagree by a factor of two — 2 to 4 minutes against 5 to 7 — which is a real difference in what the finished pizza is like, not a rounding.
Quick picks
Ranked for fit, not for hype. Every figure below is the maker’s own published number, and “n/p” means they do not publish it — which is itself worth knowing. Tap a row for the full write-up, or go straight to the listing.

Top pick · A three-burner gas grill you already own
BakerStone Original Series Grill Top Pizza Oven Box
BakerStone · Accessory
A five-sided stone chamber that sits on the grates and turns a grill's one-directional heat into something closer to an oven. BakerStone publishes the chamber dimensions, which is how you know a 12 in pizza fits and a 14 in one does not.
Published specification
- Outer size
- 22.8 x 16.3 x 6.3 in
- Baking chamber
- 14.9 x 13.8 x 3 in
- Chamber
- Five-sided stone
- Published temperature
- 600 to 800 F inside
- Bake time
- 2 to 4 minutes, per BakerStone
- Included
- Wood pizza peel, turning peel
- Fits
- Most three-burner or larger gas grills, larger charcoal grills
What it does well
- The five-sided stone chamber is the whole idea: a grill gives you heat from below only, and this puts stone on the sides and the roof as well
- Publishes its baking chamber, 14.9 x 13.8 x 3 in. Nothing else in this category tells you how big a pizza actually fits
- 600 to 800 F is a genuine jump over the 500 to 550 F a kitchen oven tops out at
- Comes with both a launching peel and a turning peel, so it is usable out of the box
What you give up
- A 3 in chamber height is low, and a tall-rimmed or heavily loaded pizza will touch the roof stone
- It borrows your grill, so the grill is unavailable for anything else while the pizza cooks, and the box has to come off before you grill again
- Still 150 F short of the 950 F a dedicated gas oven publishes — this is a New York bake, not a Neapolitan one
- Needs a three-burner grill. A two-burner will not hold the box's published temperature range
Buy it if
Someone with a good gas grill who is not ready to buy a second appliance.
Skip it if
Anyone chasing a 60-second Neapolitan bake, or anyone with a two-burner grill.

Pick 2 · Charcoal and pellet grills as well as gas
Cuisinart CPO-700 Grill Top Pizza Oven Kit
Cuisinart · Accessory
The only grill-top box here that Cuisinart says works on gas, charcoal and pellet grills alike, with a cordierite stone, reflective stainless sides and a thermometer in the lid.
Published specification
- Outer size
- 16.3 x 14 x 4.75 in
- Stone
- Cordierite
- Published temperature
- Up to 800 F
- Bake time
- 5 to 7 minutes, per Cuisinart
- Thermometer
- Integrated
- Included
- 12 in aluminum peel with folding handle
- Fits
- Gas, charcoal and pellet grills
What it does well
- Cuisinart states gas, charcoal and pellet compatibility — the pellet grill case is the one most of this category ignores
- Stainless interior sides bounce heat back at the top of the pizza, which is the half of the bake a bare stone cannot do
- The lid thermometer means you are reading the chamber rather than guessing from the grill's own dial
- 16.3 x 14 in is small enough to fit grills that the larger boxes overhang
What you give up
- Cuisinart publishes 5 to 7 minutes, which is slower than the BakerStone's published 2 to 4 — a lower, gentler bake
- Publishes no stone dimensions, only the outer box, so the real pizza limit has to be inferred from a 16.3 x 14 in footprint
- A folding-handle aluminum peel is a launching tool, not a turning tool. You will want a small turning peel as well
- Like every box here it occupies the grill, and it has to come off hot or wait for the grill to cool
Buy it if
A charcoal or pellet grill owner, where most grill-top boxes assume gas.
Skip it if
Someone who wants the fastest possible bake from a grill.

Pick 3 · A Blackstone griddle, which has no grates to sit a box on
Stanbroil Pizza Oven Attachment for Blackstone 22 and 28 in Griddles
Stanbroil · Accessory
Blackstone does not sell a pizza oven on Amazon. This is the third-party attachment that does the job: a steel hood with a removable cordierite stone and a temperature gauge, sized to the 22 and 28 in griddle tops.
Published specification
- Fits
- Blackstone 22 in and 28 in griddles
- Stone
- 17.3 x 11.8 in removable cordierite
- Overall size
- 21.8 x 14.2 x 5.3 in
- Body
- Powder-coated steel, stainless base
- Gauge
- Built-in temperature gauge
- Peak temperature
- Not published
What it does well
- Solves the problem a griddle actually has — a flat top has no grates, so a grill-top box has nothing to stand on
- The cordierite stone lifts out, which is the difference between cleaning it and living with it
- A rectangular 17.3 x 11.8 in stone matches the shape of a griddle rather than fighting it
- Stanbroil sizes the range properly: separate versions for the 17 and 22, the 22 and 28, and the 36 in griddles
What you give up
- Publishes no peak temperature. Every other conversion here states a range, and on a griddle the output is whatever your burners do
- Stanbroil is not Blackstone. It is a third-party accessory and carries no Blackstone warranty
- A griddle plate is solid steel, so the heat reaching the stone is conducted through the plate rather than radiating from flame — expect a slower bake than a grill-top box on open grates
- You must buy the version that matches your griddle width. The three sizes are not interchangeable
Buy it if
A Blackstone griddle owner who searched for a Blackstone pizza oven and found there is not one.
Skip it if
Anyone with a conventional grate grill, where the purpose-built boxes are cheaper and hotter.

Pick 4 · A Large Big Green Egg
Big Green Egg Pizza Oven Wedge for Large EGG
Big Green Egg · Accessory
The only conversion here made by the grill's own manufacturer. It replaces the dome opening with a front-loading aperture, so a kamado stops being a closed sphere and starts behaving like a deck oven.
Published specification
- Fits
- Large Big Green Egg
- Material
- Cast aluminum and marine-grade 316 stainless steel
- Pizza size
- Up to 14 in (36 cm)
- Published range
- 400 to 700 F (204 to 370 C)
- Design
- Open front, integrated heat fins
What it does well
- Made by Big Green Egg for Big Green Egg, so the fit is not something you are hoping about
- The open front is the actual gain: you can see and turn a pizza without lifting a dome and dumping the heat
- Takes a 14 in pizza, which is larger than any grill-top box here manages
- Marine-grade 316 stainless and cast aluminum is materials specification most of this category does not attempt
What you give up
- Published range tops out at 700 F, below what the same kamado will reach with the dome closed — you trade peak heat for access
- By far the most expensive conversion here, and it fits exactly one grill size
- You still need a stone. The wedge is the chamber, not the floor
- Big Green Egg sells separate Large and XL wedges. The wrong one does not fit at all
Buy it if
A Large Big Green Egg owner who wants to see the pizza while it bakes.
Skip it if
Any other grill, and anyone whose kamado is not a Large.
Where a conversion sits against a real oven
Honestly: between a kitchen oven and a dedicated one, and closer to the kitchen.
| Route | Published peak | What that produces |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic oven with a steel | 500 to 550 F | 8 to 12 minutes, pan and New York styles |
| Grill-top conversion | 600 to 800 F | 2 to 7 minutes, a genuinely crisp New York base |
| Dedicated gas pizza oven | 950 F | 60 to 90 seconds, leopard-spotted Neapolitan |
Published peak temperatures across the three routes.
A conversion costs a fraction of an entry-level gas oven and it uses an appliance you already own. What it cannot do is reach 950 F, and 950 F is the entire reason dedicated ovens exist — the full version of that argument is in are pizza ovens worth it.
The other cost is occupancy. While the box is on the grates, the grill is a pizza oven and nothing else, and it has to come off hot or you wait for it to cool. For a household that grills and makes pizza on the same evening, that is a real constraint.
Three things to check before you buy one
- Burner count. BakerStone specifies three burners or more. A two-burner grill will not hold the published temperature range under a box that size.
- Grate dimensions, not grill model. A 22.8 x 16.3 in box needs that much flat grate. Measure it.
- Whether you already own a peel. The BakerStone ships with a launching peel and a turning peel; the Cuisinart ships with a launching peel only. Turning technique explains why the second one matters more than it looks.
How these picks were made
We did not cook on these ovens. Every figure on this page is the maker’s or the listing’s published specification, cited on each write-up so you can check it in one click. The ranking comes from matching those published capabilities to a stated use case — space, pizza size, fuel, and how many pizzas you cook in a row. Where a maker does not publish a number, we say so instead of estimating one.
The full version of that argument, including what we deliberately do not claim, is on our methodology page.
