Wood-fired and multi-fuel
Ooni Karu 2 Pro: the glass door changes how you cook with wood
16 inch pizzas over a live fire, with a full glass door so you can manage that fire without opening the oven. It is the most complete multi-fuel oven here, and its stone is thinner than you would expect.

The short answer
Buy the Karu 2 Pro if you genuinely want to cook with wood at 16 inches. The full glass door is the feature that makes wood firing manageable rather than frustrating, and 17 in of cooking width is the largest wood-capable surface on this site. Budget separately for the gas burner, and expect a recovery pause between pizzas — the stone is 0.6 in, thinner than the best gas ovens.
There is a specific frustration in wood-fired cooking that nobody warns you about. You want to know what the fire is doing. The only way to find out is to open the oven. Opening the oven vents the chamber and changes what the fire is doing. You have measured the thing by destroying it, and you do this maybe fifteen times in an evening.
A glass door removes that loop entirely, and it is why the Karu 2 Pro is the pick on the multi-fuel roundup.
17 inches of cooking width
Ooni publishes a 17 in cooking area with 5.7 in of internal height, taking a 16 in pizza. That is the largest wood-capable surface in this registry, and it puts the Karu 2 Pro in a different bracket from the 12 in multi-fuel ovens it is usually shelved beside.
It matters more here than in a gas oven. Wood firing is inherently less even than a burner — you have a fire on one side and a pizza on the other — so turning clearance is not a nicety, it is how you get an evenly cooked pizza at all. Seventeen inches around a 12 in pizza gives you generous room to work a turning peel.
The digital hub and probe are the second surprise
The Karu 2 Pro ships with Ooni's Connect digital temperature hub and a food probe. On a gas oven that would be a nice-to-have; on a wood oven it is the difference between guessing and knowing, because there is no dial to read and no setpoint to trust.
The probe also quietly changes what the oven is for. A 32 in tall wood oven with a food probe is a roasting oven that also makes pizza, and that is a much better use of the fire than lighting it for four pizzas and letting the rest of the heat go.
Where it is weak
The 0.6 in stone. Under a 17 in surface, that is not a lot of thermal mass for the area it has to cover, and wood firing is exactly where floor heat does the most work. The Gozney Arc XL — a gas oven, at a similar chamber size — uses 0.8 in. Expect to pause between bakes.
The gas burner is extra. "Multi-fuel" here means wood and charcoal in the box, with gas available as a separate purchase. That is clearly stated by Ooni, and it still means the advertised price is not the multi-fuel price.
62.6 lb on legs, 32.4 in tall. In practice this is a fixed installation. It has a footprint of 32.4 by 19.8 in and it is not something you carry in and out, which puts it firmly in the built-in rather than portable category.

Ooni Karu 2 Pro Multi-Fuel Outdoor Pizza Oven
Ooni · Multi-fuel
The biggest multi-fuel oven Ooni makes: wood or charcoal out of the box, gas with a separate burner, a fully glazed door so you can watch, and a digital hub with a food probe.

- 0.6 in cordierite
- External size
- 32.4" L x 19.8" W x 32.4" H
- Weight
- 62.6 lb unboxed, 86.6 lb boxed
- Fuel
- Wood or lump charcoal as standard; gas burner sold separately
- Included
- Glass door, tray door, fuel tray and grate, digital hub with probe
What it does well
- A full glass door on a wood oven is rare and it changes how the oven is used — you manage the fire by watching it rather than by opening it
- 17 in of cooking width is the largest wood-capable surface here, and it takes a 16 in pizza
- Wood, charcoal, or gas from one body: the fuel decision stops being permanent
- The food probe makes it a genuine roasting oven, not only a pizza oven
What you give up
- The gas burner is a separate purchase, so 'multi-fuel' costs more than the listed price
- 0.6 in stone under a 17 in surface — thinner than the Gozney Arc's floor, so recovery between pizzas is slower than the size suggests
- 62.6 lb and 32 in tall on legs: this is a fixed installation in practice
- Wood means ash, a chimney to clean, and a fire to feed while you cook
Buy it if
Someone who actually wants the wood-fired part, cooks 16 in pizzas, and is willing to tend a fire.
Skip it if
Anyone whose real requirement is dinner in 20 minutes on a Tuesday. That is a gas oven.
Where these numbers came from
Karu 2 Pro or Karu 2?
The Karu 2 is the same concept — glass door, wood and charcoal standard, optional gas burner — in a 33.6 lb body with a 13.3 in stone taking a 12 in pizza. If portability matters at all, that is the one; the Roccbox comparison covers that end of the range. If you want 16 in pizzas over a fire, this is the only oven here that does it.
How these picks were made
We did not cook on these ovens. Every figure on this page is the maker’s or the listing’s published specification, cited on each write-up so you can check it in one click. The ranking comes from matching those published capabilities to a stated use case — space, pizza size, fuel, and how many pizzas you cook in a row. Where a maker does not publish a number, we say so instead of estimating one.
The full version of that argument, including what we deliberately do not claim, is on our methodology page.
